The COVID-19 Pandemic negatively impacted children and teens psychological well-being, and has been linked to problematic behavior, and has negative implications. These include harm to self, harm to others, poor communication, and disturbance during class, during lock down and beyond. Empower is an app created for parents and teachers to facilitate the connection between resources resulting in improvement in problematic behaviors in children. During this project, I was the sole UX Designer and carried out both the research and design responsibilities from start to finish, with the advice from a mentor, whom I met on a weekly basis.

Research

OVERVIEW

“Problematic Behaviors are a form of communication.”

It was clear that users knew that students were trying to communicate a need, but were overwhelmed by where to start or even pinpoint what the need was.

“Problematic behaviors affect me.”

It was revealed to me that users needed a centralized resource that provided support to for when the users, parents and teachers faced issues regarding difficult behaviors arose.

DEVELOPING THE STYLE GUIDE

Takeaways

This was my first time seeing a design project end-to end, while wearing multiple hats as the UX Researcher and Designer. I found great satisfaction and pride with presenting my research, designs, style guide, and prototype to my mentor. Moving through the steps has shown me the impact that a UX Designer has on the development process.
